It is a huge pet peeve of mine when people come into my office and asks me to look up their friend/families application in the system because they are looking for a job. EVERYONE in the system is obviously looking for a job. No Sh*t dude!

It is so unprofessional and so irritating that I don’t have the words to express how mad it makes me.

BECAUSE THAT IS NOT HOW THIS WORKS!

The professional in me will look them up since you insist on breathing down my neck and watching to see if I actually look it up or not, but the human in me is internally breathing fire. How dare you! Then you get upset when that person, whom you surely told you would get them a job because you would talk to HR about it, doesn’t get called. Now you look like an idiot because your friend expected a job or an interview and they didn’t get one. Then you ask me why they haven’t interviewed yet and I have to straight up tell you,

BECAUSE THAT IS NOT HOW THIS WORKS!

I will NOT pull your friends application up and hire them when I have 50 other people, whom put their application in weeks ago, waiting for an interview. Your friend doesn’t get to skip the damn line because you work here and just because you asked.

BECAUSE THAT IS NOT HOW THIS WORKS!

Sure, you can say, ‘Hey, just wanted to give you a referral. My ___ put his application in, his/her name is ___. They are a great/hard worker. Thanks”

That’s FINE. I will make a note of it, and if see their name, I’ll remember what you said and take that information with me into consideration when they interview.

What I wont do, is call them up and say, ‘yea John said you’re his friend. You’re hired.”

People need to understand that whoever you recommend HAS to interview and beat out the competition, just like everyone else.
